Viktorija Martinova, a five-year-old Latvian girl with burn injuries, was given preliminary treatment in Malmö. Viktorija had been burnt on the front side of the upper part of her body and her arms in May 2000 when she was hardly three years old. Earlier she lived in an orphanage.
Viktorija has now been adopted by a family in Skåne (Scania). Even if she will need further care, this is no longer a Nedira Foundation matter. Viktorija, now a Swedish citizen, is entitled to public medical service in addition to having a safe and secure life with her new family.
We wish her welcome to Sweden and wish her all the best for her life!

......... found a sanctuary in Staffanstorp
Ardita och Petrit lost contact with their family during the conflicts between Serbs and Kosovo Albanians in the spring of 1999. The family were chased away from their home in the village of Drecina by the Serbian police. In the turmoil that ensued the two children got separated from the rest of the family and had to try to fend for themselves.
After two months on the run as fugitives they arrived in Tirana, the capital of Albania. There they happened to be filmed by Aktuellt of the Swedish Television and they appealed to an uncle in Sweden to be allowed to come to him. Their uncle watched the programme and saw his relatives. Together with Kurt Sköld of the Nedira Foundation he started a campaign to have the children come to Sweden. The Swedish authorities reacted quickly and the children could be brought by air from Albania. They arrived at Staffanstorp at the end of May.
At that time they didn’t know what had happened to the rest of the family but after two months they were told that their mother, father and little sisters and brothers had returned to the family home after three months on the run. By then the Serbs had left the village. After some time Ardita and Petrit could join their family. Ardita kept a secret diary about their experiences as victims of the Serbian terror in wartime Kosovo. That diary was a kind of therapy for Ardita. The diary was dedicated to and presented to Kurt Sköld when Ardita and Petrit returned home. Kurt delivered the diary and photos for publication so that everybody can study their account. Ardita is very pleased to know that the book has been published in Sweden.
Today the book is for sale in all Swedish bookshops and it is also sold in Albania. "Mitt hjärtas dagbok" (= Diary of My Heart) by Ardita Beqiri. ISBN: 91-89196-244e.

When Karolina Mikiewicz was seven years old, she fell into a giant cauldron of boiling soup at her grandmother’s place of work. This gave her 65% burns from her knees and upwards to her armpits. Karolina who lived in Swinousjcie in Poland could not get any help from Polish doctors. Then the Nedira Foundation came into the picture and helped Karolina come to Sweden. Le Cuong came from Vietnam to Sweden as he suffered from arthrogryposis, which is a disease of the joints that has given him a clubfoot as well as defective knees and hips.
Stefan Lind, senior physician at the County Hospital of Ryhov in Jönköping, tells us that the operation will not cure him completely but it has given him feet to stand on and walk with for the first time in his life. Cuong has also attended the ceremonies in connection with World Children Prize and Globen Friends Award where he received his mark of distinction out of Queen Silvia’s hands.

Together with his parents Amir came to Sweden from Tuzla in Bosnia to have a heart operation. There was a hole in Amir’s heart and this caused difficulties in breathing and fast heart throbbing when he moved. This could lead to heart collapse.
